My father discouraged us from acting, filmmaking – Kunle Afolayanr reflection on our future, says CCI

By: Ekaete Bassey, Oluwapelumi Adeniran

Award-winning filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has revealed his late father, Adeyemi Afolayan, though a filmmaker during his lifetime, vehemently discouraged them from pursuing a career in acting and filmmaking.

The ace movie producer, during a chat with media personality Chude Jideonwo on #WithChude, discussed the legacy of his father and the work he is doing as a filmmaker and a businessman.

My dad discourage me from acting- Kunle Afolayan

He explained his father’s discouragement was premised on the opinion that they weren’t lucrative seeing they made films with beautiful stories but never really got the fulfillment they desired in term of monetary gains.

But Afoloyan, whose mind was made up already to be a filmmaker and not an actor, said he geared himself to do things differently by capitalizing on what others were not doing right or paying attention to.

I geared myself to do what other were not paying attention to differently.

“He died at the age of 56, that is pretty young. But I think he had to die for some of us to be doing what we are doing today. When people die, it is because their time is up. The reason there is continuity is that his name is being heard everywhere because of what we are doing now,” he said.

"When he was alive, my father completely discouraged anyone of us from going into filmmaking or acting. He said there was no money in it. These were the things I learnt that helped me structure the business side of what I do because I don’t want to end up like him".

“So, I said let me capitalize on what people are not doing right and things they are not paying attention to. And I picked some of those things, like, why don’t they grade? At that time, nobody was grading”.

“All the films I have done in my life, people have always said it is not for the mass market. And I say, “Okay, but it is for international markets and intellectual markets”.

FG approves N29.08bn for road, salt wall projects

By: Stephen Angbulu , Oluwapelumi Adeniran

The project will not only save the country millions of dollars in foreign exchange but also bridge the local salt demand gap - Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government today, approved N29,083,577,000 for projects in the Ministry of Works and Housing and Mines and Steel Development.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, disclosed this to newsmen after the weekly Council meeting chaired by President      Muhammadu Buhari. According to Mohammed, N27.23bn and N1.85bn were approved to rehabilitate the 30km Idoani-Otuo Road and construct a 27km retaining wall for the Ebonyi Salt Lakes, respectively.

Explaining further details about the project, Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Olamilekan Adegbite, said it will be funded directly by the Presidency. The project, he said, will not only save the country millions of dollars in foreign exchange but also bridge the local salt demand gap.

“We came to Council for approval, there’s a direct intervention by the President, for a salt project in Ebonyi State. We import our salts from abroad, spending something annually in the region of about $88m. Now this project, it will mitigate that, it will not satisfy local demand, but at least meet some of the local demand and save us the Forex.

“The salt is in Ebonyi State, of course, naturally, but it cannot be mined without this infrastructure that we’re about to do, we’re building a retaining wall because water comes in and washes the salt away every time. These are salt lakes that occur naturally, so the salt is in the lakes, but when water comes in, it washes the salt away.

“So, after the environmental impact analysis was done, the report suggested that we needed to build a retaining wall. This retaining wall is about 27 kilometres long and about 2.9 meters high. This is what we came to Council for, it’s being funded directly from the Presidency, it was awarded to Reinforced Global Resources Limited, at the sum of N1.85bn for the retaining wall. It was approved and the contract will go ahead. It will be achieved in six months,” he said.

BBN taught me forgiveness – Doyin

A recently evicted Level Up housemate of Big Brother Naija reality show, Doyin David, has said that she learnt how to forgive during her stay on the show. She told newsmen, “I learnt in the house that I am a very opinionated and forgiving person, even without people apologising to me for their wrongdoings.

‘‘There are certain people I know I will maintain friendships with even after the house, including Beauty, Chizzy and Allysyn. I am sure other people will join the list too.”

Doyinsola Anuoluwapo David (BBN participant).

Summing up her experience in the BBN house, she said, “My experience in the house was an emotional rollercoaster. The house is completely different from the outside world and everything is much more heightened. I managed my low moments by speaking with a friend or simply going into the toilet to cry. Sometimes, I reminded myself that it was a game and it would end soon, or I talked to Biggie. There were days when I was not in a happy mood but I can’t say it messed with my mental health. I am strong-willed, charismatic, and a bunch of surprises. My style is classy and chic.

I rejected Tinubu’s senatorial ticket offer – Wike

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, today, revealed that the All Progressive Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, wooed him to join the ruling party with a senatorial ticket.

Nyesom Wike ( River State Governor) and Bola Tinubu ( Presidential candidate for APC).

He said the former Lagos State governor offered him the ticket after the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, failed to fulfill his promise after he emerged as the PDP’s presidential flag bearer.

He, however, said he turned down the offer and insisted that he would remain in the main opposition party despite his grievances, adding that he never contested the primary to settle for a vice-presidential or senatorial ticket.

Tinubu, Wike meet in UK, PDP wobble

"I didn’t contest so I can become a vice presidential candidate, I am not like others who were not serious and bought senatorial form alongside presidential form and that’s why when Tinubu offered me senate slot, I didn’t go for it,’’ wike said during an ongoing media party in Port Harcourt.

Newsmen had on July 8 2022 reported that some governors elected under the platform of APC met with Wike in Porth Harcourt, Rivers State’s capital ahead of the 2023 elections.

The governors include Kayode Fayemi; Rotimi Akeredolu and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Ekiti, Ondo, and Lagos States and other entourage respectively.

But when asked today if other political parties are wooing him to join them, Wike said, “They know I am important and that is why they are wooing me, you see, if you’re an asset, people must come and talk to you. Who is a pretty girl that nobody wants to talk to?"
